Anthony  Spurgeon (Snr) Memorial Race 2008

The first Anthony Spurgeon (Snr) Memorial Race sponsored by Reed Constructions Australia, in aid of the Leukaemia Foundation, kicked off to a great start in 2007 and we now looks forward to another great day of racing scheduled for Sunday 7th December 2008 (preliminary date - to be confirmed).

Will Britains Time Trial Champion Stuart Dangerfield return to defend his title?

The 2007 Event

In Sincere Appreciation

Held at Heffron Bike Track, the home ground of Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club, the race attracted some of cyclings finest, though without the help of our sponsors and individuals the event could not have happened.

We would like to recognise our primary sponsor, Reed Constructions Australia for always opening their door to our requests for support both with this event and our junior cycling programme.

Velo-Vita for their most generous contribution of a Time Edge Pulse frame which was first prize for our Main Event. We also recognise the support and appearance of our additional sponsors who appear to the right of this page. Both their contributions of prizes and efforts in setting up their displays on the day, helped to create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Our sincere thanks to the Spurgeon Family for allowing us to associate the race with the name of Anthony Spurgeon (Snr) and to his sons for making the journey from out of town to be there for the event.

Our Donation

The days events raised $3,000.00 which have been donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.

The Crocodile and The Spurgeon Report

In keeping with his appearance each week in writing the Heffron Race Report, The Crocodile has kindly donated his time and cycling expertise to give us the low down on racing with some of cyclings elite.

Kidz Ride

Stuart Dangerfields thunder was definitely in danger of being stolen by the appearance of the ES Junior Sports Academy! Decked out in the junior version of the ESCC club gear there were smiles all around as they raced for their first cycling award. Happily, all participants took home a medal which undoubtedly appeared first thing Monday morning for class news! Images of the junior cycling ride can also be found by visiting cyclingimagesonline.com.au. Thank you to the children and their parents for taking time out of their family day to participate in the Kidz Ride.

ESCC Members

A great sense of camaraderie was present when a high number of ESCC members turned up at the crack of dawn to assist in the 'setting up' part of the day. Members contributed their time not only in setting up but also in Marshalling each event and taking entries at the registration tent. Our thanks to all volunteers of ESCC and their family members who showed up to make up our body of spectators.

Commentators

Phil Bates, Gary Sutton and 'Tank' did a great job in keeping us alert and feeding us the intricate details and predictions of the days racing.

Entrants

Without entrants there is of course, no race. A nod of thanks to the cyclists of Sydney who turned up to show their support for the first Anthony Spurgeon (Snr) Memorial Race and its beneficiary the Leukaemia Foundation.
