Veterans Handicap

Sunday 9th December 2007

Stephen Griffiths was able to best his two breakaway partners in the sprint and win the Veteran’s Handicap over Kevin Black and John Sunde.  The race was run in three groups with the 30 to 39 year olds chasing the 40 to 49 year old who were in turn chasing the 50+ group.

The young veterans were always going to have a tough go at it to bring back the 40 to 49 group who was had some solid riders in their midst including Kevin Black, Peter O’Connor and Karl Bellamy.  All riders over 40 came together with about 5 laps to go and rather than allow a bunch sprint to eventuate Sunde took off over the back pimples and Black and Griffith followed.

A race winning gap opened up and Sunde lead into the straight, Griffith and Black were able to come off his wheel with Griffith able to beat Black to line with Sunde following.  Peter O’Connor took the bunch sprint for fourth place.
