Hello fellow wet weather dwellers.. sounds like summer in Sydney was like a Scottish winter only 15 degrees warmer.. Life in Scotland is good and my lil boy Lachlan is growing everyday and learning and eating and is well above the UCI weight limit for your racing bike at only 5 months now.. Things have been busy with nicky just finishing an art exhibition with two friends over here, they all did really well and sold a bunch of paintings which was great, as she worked really hard whilst she was pregnant and then while she was a milk bar and  Lochy’s bed and breakfast.

Some of her most successful sales were her Australian water colours, which sold within  2 days.. ahh yes, the Scots still love us aussies. You can check out her art at www.nicolamoir.com http://www.nicolamoir.com

On the biking front, well not much mountainbiking for me as it’s kinda wet and cold, but I did manage to get myself to an MTB meeting to promote mountainbiking in Scotland and over 200 people from the government, the federations, forestry and cycle clubs through to tourism and ski resorts + racers like myself and the odd greenie to manage and sustain MTB for the future. If only we could do that down here. Mountainbiking generates a lot of income for local communities and we are privliged to some great cycling centres, yes we are lucky.

Road riding.. about my only riding of late, basically my daily training kit consists of the following, from toe to head.
* Assos winter thermal socks
* Shimano Gore-tex winter cycling boots
* Pearl neoprene over shoes
* Sportsbalm #2 heat crème applied to my leg muscles to stop cramp
* Pearl thermal leg warmers
* Thermal bib short
* Pearl thermal undershirt
* Normal ESCC riding jersey
* Extondodo Thermal neoprene winter long sleeve
* light weight wind vest
* thin beanie
* Pearl ear warmers
* Helmet with tape over main vents
* Rudy project  sunnies, red or clear lense.
* Wind stopper gloves

This generally has me covered from 0-9 degrees, after that I may have to loose the vest and maybe the beanie..

The question you have to ask yourselves is do you put up with the cold and the winds and quite scenic roads or Sydney traffic??

Anyway.. I’ll be seeing you soon, very soon.. I’ll be back in town for a couple of months and am looking forward to some warm weather??  Last weekend we had the first round of the Scottish road race series, I didn’t have great legs but it was a lung opener anyway, I will win one of these this year as my form is coming round.. until next time.

See you shortly. Cheers Rowney.

Hey guys n girls.. just when you thought I was getting too dam old for this, well I thought I’d move countries, pull my UK passport out of the plastic and enter the UK cyclocross nationals, held in balmy Birmigham, home to Ozzy Ozbourne and Jaguar cars..

Cyclocross is a mix of mountain bike and road criterium racing, pretty fast, extremely hard and they don’t even let you have a bottle cage on your bike. UCI rules.. and you can’t drink for an hour.. that’s a long hour without a beer.

Being an Scauttish and only ever doing a few local events I had no series points so I was starting in the smoking section.. so basically my race was almost over before it began.. I think I was called up 70th out of 84 starters. But not too worry, being about 6 degrees I like to ride fast to keep warm. By the end of the first lap I had moved up to 20th.. chasing hard on the second lap, in the big ring, fast loose straight section.. just tapping.. I  had the biggest get off.. I think I slid for a good bus length... Back up, fix my bent lever and get going again.. so I lost my chase group and spent the next 40 minutes in the hurt box.. having to be referred to by the commentator as the guy how had the biggest crash at a cross race ever..
End result, a lot pain and suffering. 12th..

Reality check.. well without not so much racing of late, and not having the latest carbon wheels without $200 tyres and a tyre gauge in my tool box, I was pretty happy with my ride. Without the get off a top ten was on the cards…  but it was fun, and it’s quite addictive.. and am starting to gather some loyal Scottish fans who yell aussie oy oy oy and Go Pal! (I think pal is paul in north talk)...

So we’ll see next week. When I get to ride the last round of the UK CX series..  bring it.

Cyclocross. Riding an almost road bike around almost mountain bike trails.. in mud and stuff and having to run across barriers.. Today was my fourth attempt at cross and my second on my new Yeti CX in the Scottish national CX series.

I will be honest and tell you it’s like 4 degrees.. so pucking cold. Secondly we were lucky today was dry and pretty mud free. Thirdly you can be an old bastard like myself and wheelie across the line when you win your 4th on the trot... I am migrating to Australia this week to see daylight..  so till next time.. I may have a better tan in the photo!
