FRF and Higgerson delivers the goods |
Tuesday 22nd January 2008 |
||||
Shaun Higgerson has delivered the 2008 FRF squad their first Heffron park victory of 2008. The former U23 Australian Team Time Trial champion was able to put a gap into the remainder of the A grade on the final lap and win by a clear 50 metres over a resurgent Anthony Spurgeon and Peter Fitzpatrick. Former and current FRF riders Luke Cridland and Chris Jory picked up the rest of the points on offer. After last weeks A grade display of power, B grade riders were relieved to see a solid handicap had been given by race officials. The sniff of a possible upset was just what the Doctor ordered and B grade rode an efficient and fast race with most riders rolling through and taking their turns. However there were still a few riders who seemed so keen to ride with A grade they should think about pinning on a red number next week. C grade under the directorship of Frank Concaecio put in another massive effort and came as close as ever to taking that elusive win, but it was not to be. Another quality field of A graders put the bit between their teeth and drove like demons erasing the handicap that had been given to B and C grades. Despite B grades efforts they were caught with five laps to go. It was touch and go as to whether C grade was going to be caught but some massive turns by Higgerson and the remainder of the FRF squad brought all the grades back together on the final lap. Higgerson took advantage of the chaos of A grade having to move through C grade and made his move on the back straight. Higgerson showed the form that won him a national title and the Joesph Sunde memorial race in 2007. Spurge showed that he is coming into form at the right time by coming over the top of Fitzpatrick just before the line. Craig Dempsey took B grade honours for the week and a Shane Howley relived old times by winning C grade. With his 3rd place, Peter Fitzpatrick moves to 13 points and clear leader of the summer series, however watch out for the return of the King. Click on images to see larger version.
