Davidson Gets The Double

Tuesday 11th December 2007

At the start of the season this author made the prediction that the school boy sprinter Luke Davidson may be the next big thing.  While the realization of this predication still has a way to go, Luke Davidson took another step by winning his second race of the summer season against some very fancied and well credentialed opponents.  With a southerly wind blowing down the main straight, Davidson timed his run perfectly to come of the wheel of Stewart Campbell and unleash his fierce kick to beat Ben Isaksen and Peter Fitzpatrick by a bike length.

A high quality A grade field rolled up to the line including Shaun Higgerson (Sth Australia.com), Perran Dellacour and Tim Willing.  The pace that was set down by the A grade field meant that it was not a question as to if A grade was going to catch B and C grades, but rather when.

As it turned out, A grade caught B grade with 6 laps to go and C grade two laps later.  With about 80 riders rolling around Heffron the peleton was spread at least 100 metres long as the big guns Early, Dellacour, Glennan and Higgerson drove the race.

Davidson sat a few wheels back hiding himself from the southerly wind coming in to the final straight and was able to come off Campbell’s wheel with about 150 metres to go and the rest was history.

With Kevin Black on the sidelines for the race it was left to Sutherland’s Peter Hamilton to bring in first B grade.  David Cobcroft continued to show consistent form and finally got the win in C grade that he had been promising for the past couple of weeks.
