Cobcroft Takes an Inspired Win on Super Tuesday

Tuesday 5th February 2008

The red, white and blue was waved from east to west coast on Super Tuesday as Hillary took on Obama for the democratic nomination.  On the other side of the earth David “Cobby” Cobcroft flew the red, white and blue for the eastern suburbs club by taking the club’s first Tuesday night victory for 2008.

Cobby was part of smooth C grade bunch that was able to keep its nose just ahead of a charging A and B grade group.  On the pimple Cobby made his move and soloed in for a victory which he devoted to his friend and eastern suburbs team mate Paul Bours who collapsed last week and spent several days in a coma following respiratory troubles. Paul is now out of a coma and we wish him a speedy recovery.

A smaller bunch of riders took to start on a day that threatened rain but never delivered it.  Like last week C grade worked well together and kept a steady and constant pace.  A grade again rode like demons and picked up B grade with 5 laps to go.  Some last minute fireworks from Liam Kelly was not enough to bridge the gap to C grade and some solid work from Dave Reed laid the platform for the first five places to be taken by C grade before the combined A and B grade group picked up the C grade back markers.

Andrew Mathews won the bunch sprint for 2nd place in front of Mathew Backhouse and Heffron Park war horse Roger Shackleton.  Like a metronome, Kevin Black again topped the B grade podium and FRF speedster Robbie Cater was the first A grader home.

The results do not alter the overall point score with Peter Fitzpatrick topping the table on thirteen points followed by Tim Willing.  Racing continues next Tuesday night and with luck Sydney’s wet weather will give the cycling community a break to get some racing in.
